The Art of the Night Oil

The Art of the Night Oil

Sleep is the most underrated active in skincare. While the conscious mind rests, the skin enters its repair phase — cell turnover doubles, collagen synthesis peaks, and trans-epidermal water loss climbs. A well-chosen night oil is what stands between that vulnerability and the morning.
Why oil, and why at night

Daytime skincare is largely defensive: SPF, antioxidants, a barrier against pollution. Nighttime is restorative. Lipids — the fats that make up nearly half of the skin's outer barrier — are most receptive between 11pm and 4am, when cortisol is low and circulation to the dermis increases.

A facial oil mirrors the skin's own sebum profile. Applied last, it seals in everything beneath it: serums, essences, moisturisers. Without that seal, up to 25% of the actives you applied earlier evaporate before sunrise.

"What you apply last is what your skin remembers longest."

Not every oil belongs on every face. Squalane is biomimetic and weightless — ideal for combination skin. Rosehip is rich in trans-retinoic acid precursors and suits skin chasing brightness. Marula is heavier, antioxidant-dense, and best for mature or wind-stressed complexions.

The fingerprint to look for is the ratio of oleic to linoleic acid. Oleic-dominant oils are nourishing but occlusive; linoleic-dominant oils are lighter and rebuild barrier function. Velour's Midnight Elixir is calibrated to a 1:1 ratio — the rare equilibrium that suits nearly every skin type.

The press, then the pillow

Warm three to four drops between your palms. Press — never rub — across the cheeks, temples and jaw. Wait sixty seconds before lying down; this allows the lipid phase to bond rather than transfer onto the pillowcase.

If you do one thing differently tonight, make it this: silk pillowcase, cotton sheets. The friction differential alone reduces morning creasing by a measurable margin.

Most moisturisers hydrate the surface and call it a day. The skin, however, is a living architecture of layers — and true hydration requires reaching every one of them. Here is how Velour's triple-weight hyaluronic complex changes the equation.
